DD07 Poster

Well here goes. Time ran away with me so I sort of ended up spending an hour and a half, although the design ended up staying relatively the same throughout. So yeah, here's my poster...

open up and say wow!

Hey guys,

Here's my version of the DD07 promotional piece. The copy stems from the idea of the tongue depressors. It may be a bit cheese, but that's the first thing that came to mind. It took me abot 45min.

Have Fun,

Design and Art with Memorial Architecture

I have found that a lot of art integrates with design in the creation of national memorials, especially in the States. Artists, architects, designers, they all take part in the creation of national memorials these days. Aesthetics are important, it seems, with the honoring of our past tragedies. Some examples are(Click on an image for more information...linking to another website) :

This is the Vietnam Veteran's memorial in D.C. I'll use a lot of D.C. Memorial sites, because it is a prime source for these artistic places. The Vietnam memorial is simple, but artistic in the making. Everything has some inspirational meaning. The highly reflective black marble is so polished that you can literally see yourself in it as clearly as a mirror.

The FDR Memorial (As in the 32nd US president) was designed with highly artistic parts. There are several waterfalls, sculptures, and walls throughout the maze like layout.

The Korean War Memorial is also, like the last two, in Washington D.C. It is located right across from the Vietnam memorial, and is composed of several sculptures of soldiers trudging through a rice field. The ARTIST that did the sculptures ensured that each of the sculptures' faces was different. Right down to the eyes, the expression, and the pose, they're unique. They're reflected in the same type of black marble as the vietnam memorial. It is highly artistic in the attention to overlooked detail in the soldiers' emotion inducing expressions. They took the time to plan out each expression to make them seem more realistic.

There are tons of different types of memorials that combine architecture, art, and design into them. Numorous, in fact. They make them into works of art, typically to help overlook the tragedy.

The Elk's Veteran's memorial is HIGHLY artistic. It has heroic sculptures, gold inlaid, and massive domed ceilings, to name only a few characteristics. It was built in 1926 for the war veterans in general.

Oklahoma City National Memorial for the OKC Bombing 11 or so years ago.

New York's temporary memorial. The perminent one is in the works.

Emily----Art + Design

In my mind, the purist examples of art and design existing as one occur when something is created with the objective of enhancing the experience of a certain physical atmosphere... Something designed for human interaction with an emotional response. Dale Chihuly is an glass artist from the U.S. who has been commissioned to enhance the atmosphere of different physical environments, through his own personal interpretation and expression. These examples are from the Botanical Garden in Atlanta, Georgia. He has taken into consideration specific details or characteristics of the environment and created a piece unique to that environment in order to enhance the emotional experience.

Another example of art and design existing together to enhance the emotional experience of a certain atmosphere is the main alter the Catedral in Seville, Spain. It is the largest in the world, designed for that specific Cathedral, and took 40 years to create. It was designed with east/west orientation, because Christ is said to have died facing west. The altar is composed of wood carved scenes(covered in gold leaf) from the new testament. The figures have illusionary sizes, which means that they all look like they are all the same size but are not. Since it is so huge, in order create the illusion, the figures towards the top are bigger than the figures at the bottom. So, a lot of thought went into the design of this altar. In my opinion, this is a very pure example of art (emotional expression) and design( craft), and is successful in enhancing the emotional experience of that atmosphere. For some the experience is horribly disgusting, and others it is positive.
